Pastor Julian was born in Wollongong, NSW. He spent his early childhood years in Australia before moving to Germany at the age of eight. His father – also a pastor of the church – had taken up a call to join the German Church (EKD).
German schooling led to High School Matriculation (Abitur), then he worked for a year as a deacon caring for mentally disabled young people. After that, he continued his studies learning Greek and Hebrew. Pastor Julian then called and was encouraged to return to Australia to study at Luther Seminary in Adelaide and become a pastor in Australia.
During his theological studies he met his future wife Sara, a trainee teacher – they were married in 1994. His first placement after graduation was to the small, mid-north SA country parish of Brinkworth. For 5 years this close-knit community provided a place of growing and ‘learning the pastoral ropes’. This was also where their children Jacqui and Tim were born. This was followed by 10 years of inner-city team ministry at St John’s Perth in Western Australia, before moving to the beautiful Barossa to serve within the Langmeil community.
In his spare time, Julian loves playing guitars, both acoustic and electric, a lasting legacy of a mis-spent youth. Love of sport also plays a small role in his life, though nowadays more passive than active. And days off will see him out meditating while riding around the Adelaide hills on a Honda 919 motorbike – as motorcycling wisdom teaches, ‘often, sanity is only one short ride away’.
Pastor Julian is passionate about the journey that God leads his people on. The best news in the world is that God loves us and longs for us to have life to the full. In a nutshell, he gives us this life through relationships: his relationship with us where through prayer and worship, he serves us and we grow closer to him. We also grow through our relationships with each other, i.e. fellowship in families and small groups, special interest groups and study groups, and serving one another in love and reaching out to serve those who don’t know him yet.
